Backbends Without Pain

back-bending-marquee-2nd-format-02.jpg

Intelligent Backbends
There is a great debate about the glutes in the backbending world. Whether to engage or soften them has many yogis confused and frustrated. In this workshop we will discuss the anatomy of the low back and hips in depth and attempt to call a peace treaty between the squeezers and the softerners. More importantly, after we all understand the functional anatomy being discussed, we will see how the two methods actually feel in our bodies. Once you are more informed about YOUR backbending you will be able to learn the steps required to deepen them safely and without pain

Foundations of a Strong Practice and Applying the Yoga Sutras in your Practice

base-marquee-wide-05-square_2.jpg

Join Marque Garaux for one, two or both of these interesting workshops on the evening of Friday, July 12th.

Workshop 1 - Foundations of a Strong Practice (1/2 primary) 6 - 7pm
Marque Garaux is a dedicated student and teacher of Ashtanga yoga who began his practice simply to explore another way to relieve his lower back pain.

When practiced correctly, āsanas are able to heal and rectify imbalances and make the system strong, stable and resilient. As a result of curing disease and bringing oneself wholly into balance, we are then able to progress in yoga.

The Primary Series is the foundational practice of traditional Ashtanga Yoga that builds strength and flexibility while healing the body and calming the mind.

Workshop 2 - Applying the principles of Patañjali's Yoga Sātras in a yoga practice 7:15 - 9pm

Join Marque as he discusses how to apply Patañjali’s principles from the yoga sūtras within the practice of āsana.

Balance: Living Between Ease and Effort

In this program we will discuss the importance of balance in all parts of our lives from the obvious and easy to discuss to the more subtle and sometimes difficult topics. This workshop would not be balanced itself without a strong dose of movement, so be prepared to challenge yourself. The practice of asana encourages mental, emotional and of course physical balance. We will break down the difficult asanas and vinyasa sequences of the Ashtanga Yoga system and learn to find the space between ease and effort.

Surya Namaskara: The Framework of Vinyasa

The Yoga Makaranda, one of the oldest-known yogic texts to describe the Sun Salutation sequence, was written in 1934 by T. Krishnamacharya. He was the teacher of K. Pattabhi Jois (founder of the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute) and B.K.S. Iyengar (founder of Iyengar Yoga) and it was through these two great teachers that almost all of today’s modern practices evolved. During this workshop, Marque will teach you the mind and body benefits of saluting the sun 6 days a week and will lead you through the classic forms of the sun A and sun B as well as modified versions for people of all ability level. Additionally we will explore other more challenging ways of moving through the forward and backward transitions that can be used to create unbelievable strength in your personal practice. Whether you have practiced for a month, a year or a decade this is a workshop that you will not want to miss.

All Levels Mysore with Marque Garaux

Practice with Marque Garaux!!! Just drop by Ahana or visit our homepage to sign up online. All levels are welcome — from newbie to advanced practitioner.

Marque Garaux, a US Marine Veteran, long time rock climber and overall outdoor enthusiast, discovered Ashtanga Yoga while seeking different ways to alleviate his lower back pain. After noticing an almost immediate physical change, Marque then slowly began to see other positive changes happening in his life as well. With no Ashtanga teachers in the area, he found himself with no choice but to get up early and practice on his own before work everyday. During this time Marque also attended a 200 hour teacher training and several Ashtanga workshops and intensives to deepen his understanding of this beautiful system.
In the fall of 2014 Marque decided to follow in the footsteps of the teachers that he most respected and applied for study at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI). Marque was accepted and spent the first 2 months of 2015 in Mysore, India learning under the guidance of R. Sharath Jois. Since that first trip, Marque has practiced with Sharath during multipe US tours and has also returned to India each year where he has practiced with both Sharath and Saraswathi. Marque received the blessing as an Authorized Level 2 teacher from Sharath on December 12th, 2017 during his morning practice.
Marque is the owner of Great Lakes Ashtanga Yoga, where he runs a full Mysore program, teaches private lessons and hosts workshops. He, his wife and their adopted Indian street dog travel as often as possible to climb or to share yoga with others.

Holy Hips Workshop - 2hrs

19_AHANA_RimaV2 2.jpg

Hip Opening poses can be physically demanding and emotionally juicy as they encourage us to face tightness in the hip and pelvic region of our body. In this workshop, we will go deep into our hips through a vigorous asana sequence and train to stay with the intensity of the experience so as to realize how the place we find ourselves in is rich in "sensational" information.

Evening Class with Kirtan - 2 hrs

19_AHANA_Rima V2_1.jpg

In an ancient text called The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, it is said that we can hear the effect of the yoga practice in the sound of our voice. When our voice becomes clear, melodious and resonant, it is a sign that yoga is working. In this class, we will first focus on different iterations of an asana to experience what a "sound", aligned body feels like and we will end class with by listening to the sound of our voice through chanting ancient mantras Kirtan style. Stay tuned!
